Cyclone Kirrily will impact the North Queensland region in the coming days. It’s time to prep your yard and garden.
We know these systems are notoriously unpredictable however, it’s much better to be well prepared, than to regret it later.
Be cyclone read – must-do preps in your garden:
Here is a list of must-do’s to help reduce risk of damage to your garden and home.
- Turn your irrigation off and ensure the irrigation controller box is securely shut and locked. Tip – remove the keys and store safely inside.
- Lock the lids to in-ground valve boxes securely in place. Tip – you may wish to place a heavy brick or weight on top of it.
- Remove tarps or covers from sandpits and wet down loose sand.
- Identify a sheltered area of the garden. Tip – you may be aware of this area from past experience or it may become more obvious as conditions become more windy.
- Secure compost bins and if possible move to sheltered area of garden or undercover.
- Move all pot plants to the sheltered area of the garden.
- Take down all hanging pots, decorations, and shadecloth.
- Turn trampolines upside down. Tip – remove safety netting.
- Pick up and pack away animal toys, shelters and bedding.
- Remove loose palm leaves and rid trees of coconuts if possible.
