Prickles? Dead lawn? Jodi & Darren called in Plant-EM

Do you struggle with prickles in your lawn? Have you got dead or dying grass? So did Darren and Jodi - until they called in lawn and irrigation specialists Plant-EM.

Let’s take a look back at their lawn & garden transformation!

Before, prickles played havoc, the family lacked privacy and maintenance was an ongoing chore now, all that’s changed.

As part of the Plant-EM service William visited Darren & Jodi on completion of their garden restoration to reflect on the project and provide a demonstration of their new, automated, water-efficient irrigation system.

Q&A

1. Why did you decide to overhaul your front lawn and gardens?

Jodi –  One of our main goals was achieving some privacy down the side of our home. Because our front area isn’t fenced, and we live on a corner block close to the river and walking tracks we get a  little bit of foot traffic with people often walking close to our windows and thus encroaching on our privacy.  So we wanted to screen that part of the house where we spend time and when we look out we can admire  the colours and plant/bird life that the new garden/screen will eventually attract.

The dry conditions of the last 5 odd years, pre 2019 flood event had resulted in areas of our lawn dying, a lot of weed/prickles and a sprinkler system that we installed ourselves with the help of friends over 15 years ago that was also on its last legs.  So we wanted to start fresh, look at a lawn/grass that was more pest and drought resistant and that could stay green and an automated sprinkler system  that provided the coverage to ensure we did not have to spend time watering manually to fill any gaps that may have been missed.

Ultimately it will allow us to simply enjoy our garden and probably provide Darren with a bit of a hobby …..maybe.

We also knew that it would be helping a local business or businesses who have no doubt had a tough time of it over the last five-odd years.

2. What did your garden restoration involve?

Jodi – We had the old turf removed as it was unhealthy and full of prickles. Now we’ve got a brand-new lawn including an automated irrigation system to keep it green and healthy. William and the team have also revamped an existing garden, removed one that was right along the side of the home and created a new garden bed along the side with screening plants. As that matures it will provide us the privacy we’re chasing.

3. How would you describe the service you have received?

Darren -It’s been a good experience. William came out on a Saturday afternoon initially which was convenient for us and we sat down and he asked questions to understand what we were chasing in a garden/lawn. He then measured things up and provided us an idea of the price of what we were chasing which I appreciate because it just makes the process more efficient and timely.

A few days later William presented a plan so visually we could see the project coming alive with the plant recommendations and shape of the gardens allowing us to interact with him in making a few small changes and to allow the project to move forward.  William did what he said he would, offered suggestions to us through the project on pot colours; garden edging and colours – just little things but in the overall project can make a big difference to the end result.

The technology Bill recommended with the Hunter Hydrawise controller and flow meter is very impressive – we can turn the sprinkler system on via an app on our mobile phones so if we are out of Town  we can still control what is happening (ie, if it has rained we can switch off the irrigation system) and if there is a fault Bill can access the app and he knows quickly what the issue is so we can get a quick resolution.

The Plant EM team were friendly and keen to produce a good result so we have no hesitation in recommending Plant EM’s services.

4. What do you think of the final result?

Jodi – We Love it! And the whole Plant-EM team is lovely as well.  In the few weeks since the project was completed we have had/heard several comments from strangers walking past – looks great; love your garden; Oh look how that’s changed.  So I think the feedback speaks for itself.

5. How will this impact how you’re going to use this area?

Darren – Lower maintenance, less prickles on the feet, so we can actually walk on the grass and it looks great too, so our home has much better street appeal.  The screen in 12 months will give us the privacy we are looking for.

Jodi – And we’re planning on putting a seat down the side and to spend more time there – we’ve got lots of natives now so, I like the birds and the butterflies so I plan on enjoying the space more, I plan on coming home from work and enjoying a nice wine in the garden.

Our son likes to kick a soccer ball around so he won’t have to put his boots on once the lawn gets going now, he can kick the ball around bare foot if he wants.

6. Would you recommend others to use Plant-EM?

Jodi – Definitely, yes.

Bill really wanted to know exactly what we wanted and why and how he could achieve that so it was good… for an old fella (laughs)

In William’s Words

William Crabb - Director Plant-EM in Townsville

Jodi & Darren were really good clients because they knew what they wanted, they knew how they wanted it to look and then once we’d established the plan, then it also gave them the visual and they were able to change or adapt things to exactly what they wanted for their garden.

So they’ve made it easy to work with them, in regards to being able to achieve the end goal.

Is the team happy with this job?

We were just finishing up before and I said, you know it looks really great and we’ve also had people come past and say wow it looks fantastic, so it’s not only Darren and Jodi’s garden it’s everyone’s garden we’re doing here because a lot of people drive past and it’s a beautiful home.

So I think the garden and the home work together to create that ultimate result and the team was really pleased with the end result.
