After all your hard work preparing the garden beds, let’s get this garden started!
Be it several beds or just one small corner of the yard, you will be able to reap your reward in no time.
Before planting your selection of plants ensure you re-dig the garden beds as this has been proven to enhance soil fertility and give your plants a better start.
Planning the plot!
As the days are still quite warm don’t dismiss planting by seed as well as seedlings, the benefit being, a packet of seed if stored correctly can last a number of seasons.
By now you will have chosen your first selection of plants. Winter Greens, Spinach, Cabbage, Lettuce, Beans, Peas and don’t forget the root vegetables Carrots, Turnips, Onions etc.
The fruiting time will vary with some taking three months to harvest whilst others will take only a few weeks. Planting seeds and seedlings of the same variety will extend the yield time across the season. Quick yielders allow the opportunity for two sowings in the one season.
Providing shade or protection from the afternoon sun will be a great benefit to the leafy greens (lettuce, spinach and alike). This allows them to use their energy to grow instead of just surviving.

Time to place a good layer of mulch around the plants to cover the soil, retain moisture and help suppress weeds.

Your Watering Options
Watering your veggie garden can be quite time consuming and sometimes the last thing on your mind.
Drip Irrigation:
For my veggie garden I have set up a drip system that runs off a hose with a simple timer installed on the tap. This way I can turn it on to water while I do other things, like tending to the garden or enjoying time with my family. Some investment is required up front for Drip Irrigation but this method can be used for several seasons making it very cost effective. It’s efficient, waters the soil whilst keeping the leaves dry ensuring less disease and also very convenient for busy gardeners. Available in a DIY kit, the system can be installed to suit all watering needs.
Hand watering:
Watering by hand either by hose or watering can is always an option and requires very little investment.
With very little upfront investment, hand watering is easy for the whole family to enjoy. Any spray on the leaves though can promote disease and it’s difficult to gauge if the root zone is getting watered properly. This method is also time consuming and monitoring your water usage is unreliable.
Monitoring Water consumption:
A Watering can is a better way of monitoring how much water is used but is very timely for large gardens. Another option would be to time how long you water each plant when using the hose allowing for adjustment with timing if required (if too dry increase, too wet decrease time). Your water meter is handy for monitoring your usage during dryer times.
